AI DraftFeb 26, 2026

Azusa, Lost but Seeking + Glacial Chasm + Life from the Loam

Overview
With Azusa, Lost but Seeking you may play up to three lands per turn (one normally plus Azusa’s two extra) [2020-06-23]. Life from the Loam can be dredged to return itself to your hand instead of drawing, then cast to return up to three lands from your graveyard to your hand; those lands can be replayed that turn using Azusa’s extra land plays [Ruling 2024-01-12] . Glacial Chasm’s "When this land enters, sacrifice a land" triggered ability will require you to sacrifice a land when that trigger resolves; if you control no other lands, you must sacrifice Glacial Chasm itself [Ruling 2008-08-01]. Glacial Chasm’s cumulative upkeep requires putting an age counter on it at your upkeep and then paying life for each age counter if you wish to keep it ; paying life for cumulative upkeep is a payment (a cost) and is not prevented by Glacial Chasm’s “Prevent all damage that would be dealt to you” effect .
Step 1
Begin with Azusa on the battlefield (you may play two additional lands on each of your turns) [Ruling 2020-06-23], Glacial Chasm either not yet on the battlefield or entering, and Life from the Loam in your graveyard.
Step 2
At your draw step, instead of drawing, choose to dredge Life from the Loam (if you have enough library cards) to mill three and return Life from the Loam from your graveyard to your hand [Ruling 2024-01-12].
Step 3
During your main phase, with the stack empty, you may cast Life from the Loam as a sorcery. When it resolves, return up to three target land cards from your graveyard to your hand (this is a resolution effect of the spell). After resolution you get priority and can then take special actions such as playing lands .
Step 4
Use Azusa’s increased land plays (one base play plus two additional from Azusa = up to three lands that turn) to put the returned lands onto the battlefield as special actions while the stack is empty in your main phase [Ruling 2020-06-23].
Step 5
If you play Glacial Chasm (one of the lands you returned or another land), when it enters its "When this land enters, sacrifice a land" triggered ability goes on the stack. When that trigger resolves you must sacrifice a land you control; you may choose any land you control to sacrifice, including a land you just played this turn. If you control no other lands when the ability resolves, you must sacrifice Glacial Chasm itself [Ruling 2008-08-01].
Step 6
On each upkeep while Glacial Chasm is on the battlefield, its cumulative upkeep triggers: put an age counter on it and then you may pay 2 life for each age counter on it or sacrifice it if you don’t pay . Glacial Chasm’s "Prevent all damage that would be dealt to you" does not stop you from paying life to satisfy cumulative upkeep because that is a payment decision, not damage prevention .
Resolution
You can use Life from the Loam’s dredge to return Loam to your hand and then cast it to put up to three lands from your graveyard into your hand, and Azusa lets you play up to three lands that turn [Ruling 2024-01-12] [Ruling 2020-06-23]. If Glacial Chasm enters, its triggered “sacrifice a land” ability will resolve and you must sacrifice a land you control (which can be one you recently played); if you control no other lands when that ability resolves you must sacrifice Glacial Chasm itself [Ruling 2008-08-01]. Keeping Glacial Chasm long-term requires paying its cumulative upkeep each upkeep (increasing life payments as age counters accumulate) ; Glacial Chasm’s damage-prevention does not stop you from paying life to satisfy that upkeep cost .
