Cliffhaven Vampire
Exquisite Blood
AI DraftFeb 26, 2026

Cliffhaven Vampire + Exquisite Blood

Overview
When you (the controller of Cliffhaven Vampire and Exquisite Blood) gain life, Cliffhaven Vampire’s triggered ability triggers once for that life-gaining event and, when it resolves, makes each opponent lose 1 life [Ruling 2016-01-22]. Each opponent losing life causes Exquisite Blood to trigger; when those Exquisite Blood triggers resolve you gain that much life, which in turn triggers Cliffhaven again, producing a repeating chain of triggered abilities until something stops it. Life totals are updated as the effects resolve and state-based actions are checked .
Step 1
You have just gained life from some source; that life gain is a life-gaining event which causes Cliffhaven Vampire’s triggered ability (“Whenever you gain life, each opponent loses 1 life”) to trigger once for that event .
Step 2
That triggered ability goes on the stack. When it resolves, each opponent’s life total is decreased by 1; life totals are adjusted as effects resolve .
Step 3
Each opponent losing life is a life-loss event that causes Exquisite Blood’s triggered ability (“Whenever an opponent loses life, you gain that much life”) to trigger once for each opponent who lost life; those Exquisite Blood triggers go on the stack (one per opponent who lost life).
Step 4
When each Exquisite Blood trigger resolves, you gain the amount of life lost by that opponent (typically 1), and each such life-gain event will cause Cliffhaven Vampire’s ability to trigger again (once per life-gain event) [Ruling 2016-01-22].
Step 5
Those new Cliffhaven triggers, when they resolve, cause each opponent to lose 1 life again, creating more Exquisite Blood triggers, which create more life-gain events, and so on — the pattern repeats as long as the permanents remain in play and life gain/loss isn’t prevented.
Step 6
After each resolution that changes life totals, state-based actions are checked and a player whose life total is 0 or less loses the game immediately .
Resolution
The two cards create a loop of triggered abilities: Cliffhaven’s life-gain trigger causes opponents to lose life, Exquisite Blood’s triggers cause you to gain life, and those life gains re-trigger Cliffhaven, and so on. These are triggered abilities that go on the stack and will continue adding triggers as long as the cards remain in play and the relevant life-gain/life-loss events can occur; life totals are adjusted as each effect resolves and state-based actions are checked [Ruling 2016-01-22]. If an opponent’s life total is reduced to 0 or less by one of these resolutions they lose the game immediately via state-based actions; note the existing ruling about simultaneous loss and Exquisite Blood’s trigger timing in relevant corner cases [Ruling 2012-05-01].
