The Battlefield

Dualcaster Mage
Twinflame
AI DraftFeb 26, 2026

Dualcaster Mage + Twinflame

Overview
If you cast Twinflame (a sorcery) and Dualcaster Mage enters the battlefield while that Twinflame spell is on the stack (for example, you flash in Dualcaster Mage in response to Twinflame), Dualcaster Mage’s enter-the-battlefield trigger can copy that Twinflame spell and put a copy of the spell onto the stack. Copies of Twinflame are put onto the stack by that ability rather than being cast, and you may choose new targets for those copies; when each Twinflame (original or copy) resolves it creates token copies of the targeted creatures (the tokens have haste and are exiled at the next end step). All of this follows the copying rules and the casting/stack timing rules for triggers and spells . Rulings clarify that Dualcaster Mage may target any instant or sorcery spell on the stack (not only ones that themselves have targets) [Ruling 2016-06-08].
Step 1
You cast Twinflame (the original Twinflame spell is on the stack); Strive targets are chosen and its total cost is paid as part of the casting process .
Step 2
In response to Twinflame while it is still on the stack, you cast Dualcaster Mage (flash) and let it resolve; when Dualcaster Mage enters the battlefield its triggered ability triggers and is put on the stack (triggered abilities choose targets when put on the stack) .
Step 3
When the Dualcaster Mage trigger resolves it copies the target instant or sorcery spell and puts that copy of Twinflame onto the stack. The copy is a spell on the stack created by the copy effect; it wasn't cast and copies the original’s decisions unless you choose new targets for the copy as the Mage’s ability allows .
Step 4
The copied Twinflame (the copy on the stack) resolves (or players may respond before it resolves). When that copy resolves it creates token copies of the creature(s chosen as targets for that Twinflame copy; those tokens enter the battlefield with haste and the exile timing specified by Twinflame's text), and each entering token that is a Dualcaster Mage will trigger its ETB ability .
Step 5
When those token Dualcaster Mage triggered abilities are put on the stack they may target any instant or sorcery spell that currently exists on the stack (for example, the original Twinflame spell may still be on the stack under the copy). Each such trigger that resolves copies the targeted spell and puts another copy onto the stack .
Step 6
All created copies of Twinflame that resolve will create their own token creatures. Tokens cease to exist when they are exiled as Twinflame specifies; copies of spells cease to exist if they move off the stack .
Resolution
Dualcaster Mage can target and copy Twinflame while Twinflame is on the stack; the copy is a spell put onto the stack by the Mage’s triggered ability, and you may choose new targets for that copy. When any Twinflame (original or copy) resolves it creates token copies of the targeted creatures; any token copies that are themselves Dualcaster Mages will trigger when they enter and can target an instant or sorcery spell that is currently on the stack. These interactions are governed by the copying rules and normal triggered-ability/stack timing rules . See also the official ruling that Dualcaster Mage can target any instant or sorcery spell on the stack [Ruling 2016-06-08].
