The Battlefield

Faeburrow Elder
Freed from the Real
AI DraftFeb 26, 2026

Faeburrow Elder + Freed from the Real

Overview
If Freed from the Real is attached to Faeburrow Elder, only Freed’s controller can pay Freed’s {U} costs to tap or untap Faeburrow Elder (see and Ruling [2018-03-16]). Using Freed to tap the Elder will prevent the Elder’s {T} mana ability from being activated while it is tapped; untapping it with Freed can allow the Elder’s controller to activate its {T} ability if the Elder is otherwise allowed to activate that ability (see ).
Step 1
Freed from the Real is cast targeting Faeburrow Elder and, when it resolves, it enters the battlefield attached to Faeburrow Elder per and .
Step 2
Freed’s controller is the controller of the Aura and therefore the only player who may activate Freed’s {U}: Tap enchanted creature and {U}: Untap enchanted creature abilities (; Ruling [2018-03-16]).
Step 3
If Freed’s controller pays {U} and activates Freed’s tap ability, Faeburrow Elder becomes tapped as the effect resolves; while tapped it cannot pay its own {T} cost to produce mana (the {T} cost requires the Elder to be untapped).
Step 4
If Freed’s controller pays {U} and activates Freed’s untap ability, Faeburrow Elder becomes untapped as the effect resolves; after it’s untapped the Elder’s controller may attempt to activate the Elder’s {T} mana ability if not restricted by other rules (see for summoning-sickness restrictions).
Step 5
Activations of Freed happen only when its controller has priority and can pay {U}; the Elder’s controller cannot use Freed’s abilities unless they also control the Aura ().
Step 6
If Freed becomes unattached to Elder (for example, the Aura is moved or becomes illegal), state-based actions will put the Aura into its owner’s graveyard if it’s attached to an illegal object ().
Resolution
Freed from the Real’s activated abilities can be activated only by the Aura’s controller, even if that player doesn’t control Faeburrow Elder (; Ruling [2018-03-16]). When Freed’s controller pays {U} to tap the Elder, the Elder becomes tapped and therefore cannot pay its {T} cost to produce mana while tapped. If Freed’s controller pays {U} to untap the Elder, the Elder becomes untapped and its controller may then activate its {T} mana ability if allowed by other rules (for example, the summoning-sickness restriction in ).
