Karlach, Fury of Avernus
Port Razer
Sphinx of the Second Sun
AI DraftFeb 28, 2026

Karlach, Fury of Avernus + Port Razer + Sphinx of the Second Sun

Overview
When you attack in the first combat of the turn, Karlach’s triggered ability (which triggers during declare attackers) will resolve and untap the attacking creatures, give them first strike until end of turn, and create an additional combat phase after the current combat. During that combat, if Port Razer deals combat damage to a player its triggered ability will resolve, untapping all your creatures and creating another additional combat phase after the current combat; because Port Razer’s additional combat was created later than Karlach’s, Port Razer’s extra combat is the first of the two added combats to occur [Ruling 2020-11-10]. The additional combats are inserted immediately after the combat phase(s) (you move from the end of one combat phase to the beginning of the next; Karlach does not create extra main phases) [Ruling 2022-06-10]. Sphinx of the Second Sun only creates an additional beginning phase at the beginning of a postcombat main phase; because the extra combat phases created by Karlach and Port Razer are inserted before you would reach the postcombat main, Sphinx’s trigger will not occur until you actually reach a postcombat main (which happens after all inserted combats are done), at which point Sphinx will add an additional beginning phase after that postcombat main [Ruling 2020-11-10].
Step 1
Declare attackers for the first (normal) combat; creatures become attacking and tapped as part of declaration ; Karlach's "Whenever you attack, if it's the first combat phase of the turn,..." triggers .
Step 2
Karlach’s triggered ability is put on the stack and eventually resolves, untapping all attacking creatures and giving them first strike until end of turn; it also creates an additional combat phase to occur after this combat .
Step 3
Proceed through the combat steps; during the combat damage step, if Port Razer deals combat damage to a player its triggered ability triggers .
Step 4
Port Razer’s triggered ability is put on the stack and resolves, untapping each creature you control (so attackers become untapped and can be declared as attackers in the subsequent additional combat) and creating another additional combat phase after this phase .
Step 5
Because Port Razer’s additional combat was created later in time than Karlach’s, Port Razer’s added combat is the first of the added combats to occur when you leave the current combat [Ruling 2020-11-10].
Step 6
When the current combat ends, instead of going to a postcombat main phase immediately you move to the beginning of the next combat (the first added combat) [Ruling 2022-06-10]; after that combat ends you move to the second added combat, then finally to the postcombat main.
Step 7
At the beginning of that postcombat main phase Sphinx’s ability ("At the beginning of each of your postcombat main phases...") triggers and will add an additional beginning phase after this postcombat main ; if further effects in that postcombat main create additional combats after this main, ordering between them and Sphinx’s beginning-phase insertion follows the 'most recent first' rule [Ruling 2020-11-10].
Resolution
Order of effects and the resulting phases: Karlach’s attack-trigger resolves during the declare attackers step and creates an additional combat after the current combat. Port Razer’s damage-trigger (if it deals combat damage to a player) resolves in the combat damage step and also creates an additional combat after the current combat; because Port Razer’s ability is created later in time than Karlach’s, Port Razer’s additional combat happens first among the added combats [Ruling 2020-11-10]. Both added combats are inserted immediately after the current combat phase (you move directly from the end of combat to the beginning of the next combat(s); Karlach does not add main phases) [Ruling 2022-06-10]. Sphinx’s triggered ability only triggers at the beginning of a postcombat main phase and thus will only create its additional beginning phase once you actually arrive at a postcombat main phase (which is after all the inserted combats finish). Port Razer’s attack restriction (“can’t attack a player it has already attacked this turn”) prevents it from attacking the same player again in a later combat but does not prevent it from attacking planeswalkers or battles, and Port Razer does not have to attack in the additional combat it created [Ruling 2024-04-12] [Ruling 2020-11-10].
