Kodama of the East Tree + Rampaging Baloths + Simic Growth Chamber
Overview
When Simic Growth Chamber enters the battlefield, it, Rampaging Baloths, and Kodama of the East Tree will produce triggered abilities; Kodama’s trigger (which checks that the entering permanent wasn’t itself put onto the battlefield by Kodama) may put a permanent from your hand onto the battlefield, and if that permanent is a land it will cause Rampaging Baloths’ landfall to trigger as well .
Step 1
Simic Growth Chamber enters the battlefield (it enters tapped per its text). This event causes triggered abilities to trigger: Growth Chamber’s ETB (“When this land enters, return a land you control to its owner’s hand”), Rampaging Baloths’ landfall ability (because a land you control entered), and Kodama’s “Whenever another permanent you control enters…” ability (because another permanent — the land — entered).
Step 2
All three triggered abilities go to the stack waiting to resolve. (How they are ordered on the stack depends on standard triggered-ability ordering rules for multiple triggers; the ordering does not change the fact that all three triggered.)
Step 3
When Growth Chamber’s ETB trigger resolves, you return a land you control to its owner’s hand. If you had no other lands, this will be Growth Chamber itself (see Ruling [2013-04-15]); returning it to hand simply removes it from the battlefield — it does not by itself cause Kodama or Baloths to trigger (those triggers were caused by the original entry event).
Step 4
When Kodama’s triggered ability (caused by the land entering) resolves, you may put a permanent card with mana value equal to or less than that entering permanent’s mana value from your hand onto the battlefield. The condition in Kodama’s text — “if it wasn't put onto the battlefield with this ability” — refers to the permanent that caused Kodama’s trigger, not to the card you may put onto the battlefield with Kodama’s ability.
Step 5
If you choose to put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield with Kodama’s ability, that land entering the battlefield will cause Rampaging Baloths’ landfall ability to trigger (a land entering by an ability still triggers landfall). Kodama will not trigger off that new entry because Kodama’s text prevents it from triggering for permanents put onto the battlefield by Kodama’s own ability.
Resolution
When Simic Growth Chamber enters the battlefield: Growth Chamber’s own “when this land enters, return a land you control to its owner’s hand” trigger, Rampaging Baloths’ landfall trigger, and Kodama of the East Tree’s triggered ability all trigger. Kodama’s trigger is triggered because another permanent (the land) entered that was not put onto the battlefield by Kodama’s ability. If Kodama’s triggered ability resolves and you choose to put a permanent (including a land returned to your hand by Growth Chamber) from your hand onto the battlefield, that permanent entering the battlefield will cause Rampaging Baloths’ landfall to trigger (there is nothing preventing landfall from triggering when a land is put onto the battlefield by an ability). Kodama’s ability will not trigger off a permanent that itself was put onto the battlefield by Kodama’s ability (that is the explicit check in Kodama’s text). If Growth Chamber’s ETB forces you to return itself to your hand (see Ruling [2013-04-15]), you can still choose on Kodama’s resolution to put that same card back onto the battlefield from your hand, and that re-entry will trigger Baloths’ landfall but will not re-trigger Kodama for that specific entry (Ruling [2013-04-15]; Ruling [2024-11-08]).
