Lightning Runner
Stone Idol Generator
AI DraftFeb 26, 2026

Lightning Runner + Stone Idol Generator

Overview
When Lightning Runner attacks both its own triggered ability and Stone Idol Generator’s triggered ability trigger. These triggers are put on the stack together and you order them (active player’s order) . Resolving those triggers gives you energy counters (two from Lightning Runner’s ability and one from Stone Idol Generator’s) — energy counters are gained and spent as described in the ruling [Ruling 2024-06-07]. Lightning Runner’s ability then lets you may pay eight {E} as part of its resolution (that choice is a cost checked on resolution) ; if you do pay eight {E}, you untap all creatures you control (including ones that aren’t attacking) and get an additional combat phase after this one [Ruling 2017-02-09].
Step 1
Declare attackers and declare Lightning Runner as attacking; this causes Lightning Runner’s attack-trigger and Stone Idol Generator’s attack-trigger to trigger simultaneously.
Step 2
Because you control both triggered abilities, you order them on the stack in the order you choose .
Step 3
Resolve the topmost triggered ability. If it is a 'get {E}' trigger, you gain the indicated energy counters immediately when that ability resolves (energy counters are tracked as per Ruling [2024-06-07]).
Step 4
If Lightning Runner’s triggered ability resolves, you first get {E}{E} (two energy counters) when it resolves [Ruling 2024-06-07], then you may choose to pay eight {E} as part of that ability’s resolution .
Step 5
If you choose to pay eight {E}, you lose eight energy counters as payment (you must have those counters to do so) [Ruling 2024-06-07], then you untap all creatures you control (including ones that aren’t attacking) and an additional combat phase is created to occur after this phase [Ruling 2017-02-09].
Resolution
Official ruling: When Lightning Runner attacks, both Lightning Runner’s “Whenever this creature attacks, you get {E}{E}, then you may pay eight {E} …” trigger and Stone Idol Generator’s “Whenever a creature you control attacks, you get {E}” trigger trigger. If they trigger at the same time, you (the controller of those triggered abilities) put them on the stack in any order you choose . When each trigger resolves you gain the indicated energy counters; gaining and spending energy counters works as described in the ruling (you get counters when an effect says you get {E} and to pay {E} you lose that many counters) [Ruling 2024-06-07]. The “you may pay eight {E}” part of Lightning Runner’s trigger is an optional payment checked as that ability resolves ; you can only pay eight {E} if you have eight or more energy counters at that moment. If you do pay eight {E} while that ability resolves, you untap all creatures you control (including ones that aren’t attacking) and there will be an additional combat phase after this one [Ruling 2017-02-09].
