Marauding Raptor
Polyraptor
AI DraftFeb 26, 2026

Marauding Raptor + Polyraptor

Overview
Marauding Raptor reduces Polyraptor’s generic mana cost by {1} but cannot reduce its colored mana requirement [Ruling [2019-07-12]]. When Polyraptor enters the battlefield, Marauding Raptor’s triggered ability will trigger and, when it resolves, deal 2 damage to Polyraptor (and give the Raptor +2/+0 because Polyraptor is a Dinosaur). That damage will cause Polyraptor’s Enrage triggered ability to trigger; when that Enrage resolves it creates a Polyraptor token, which in turn causes Marauding Raptor’s trigger again. This repeats, creating a repeating chain of triggers and tokens (a non-terminating loop of triggered abilities) while the chain continues to resolve .
Step 1
You cast Polyraptor while you control Marauding Raptor. Marauding Raptor reduces only the generic portion of Polyraptor’s cost, so Polyraptor’s cost becomes {5}{G}{G} (it still requires its green mana) [Ruling [2019-07-12]].
Step 2
Polyraptor’s spell resolves and its controller puts it onto the battlefield .
Step 3
Marauding Raptor’s ability “Whenever another creature you control enters” triggers because Polyraptor entered the battlefield; that triggered ability is put on the stack and later resolves .
Step 4
When Marauding Raptor’s triggered ability resolves it deals 2 damage to the entering creature (Polyraptor). Because damage to creatures is marked, 2 damage is marked on Polyraptor .
Step 5
Because Polyraptor is a Dinosaur and it was dealt damage by Marauding Raptor’s ability, Marauding Raptor’s ability also grants itself +2/+0 until end of turn as part of that same resolution.
Step 6
The damage dealt to Polyraptor is a trigger event for Polyraptor’s Enrage ability (“Whenever this creature is dealt damage, create a token that’s a copy of this creature”). Polyraptor’s Enrage triggered ability is created and will be put on the stack as a triggered ability resolves and triggers are handled .
Step 7
When Polyraptor’s Enrage resolves it creates a token that’s a copy of Polyraptor. That token enters the battlefield under its controller’s control .
Step 8
The new token entering causes Marauding Raptor’s “another creature you control enters” ability to trigger again, and the loop repeats: Raptor’s ability will deal 2 damage to the token, marking damage and triggering that token’s Enrage, which when it resolves creates another token, etc. Damage marking and state-based death checks happen as appropriate .
Resolution
Sequence: cast Polyraptor for {5}{G}{G} if you control Marauding Raptor (the Raptor reduces only generic cost) [Ruling [2019-07-12]]; Polyraptor enters the battlefield ; Marauding Raptor’s “another creature enters” trigger goes on the stack and eventually resolves, dealing 2 damage to Polyraptor and granting Marauding Raptor +2/+0 (because a Dinosaur was dealt damage this way) ; Polyraptor’s Enrage then triggers from having been dealt damage and will create a token copy when it resolves; that token entering re-triggers the Raptor’s ability and the loop continues. Damage is marked on creatures as appropriate , and triggered abilities created by those events are handled as triggered abilities are placed on the stack . The mechanical result is an unbounded sequence of triggered abilities producing more Polyraptor tokens until an external effect or rule stops it.
