Overview

When Tandem Lookout is soulbonded to Niv-Mizzet, Parun, Niv-Mizzet gains the triggered ability “Whenever this creature deals damage to an opponent, draw a card.” (see ). Step 1

Niv-Mizzet deals damage to an opponent (this can be combat damage or damage from an ability). That event creates a triggered ability (the Lookout-granted 'Whenever this creature deals damage to an opponent, draw a card') controlled by Niv-Mizzet’s controller and it is put on the stack per .

Step 3

When that Lookout-trigger resolves you draw a card. Drawing a card causes Niv-Mizzet’s printed ability “Whenever you draw a card, Niv-Mizzet deals 1 damage to any target” to trigger and be put on the stack (this is a separate triggered ability) per .

Step 4

When Niv-Mizzet’s draw-trigger resolves it deals 1 damage to any target you choose. If you choose an opponent as the target and that damage is dealt, the Lookout-granted trigger (draw a card) triggers again and is put on the stack, repeating the cycle as long as the conditions (damage to an opponent and the creatures remaining paired) continue to be met.

Tandem Lookout’s soulbond gives the paired creatures the triggered draw-on-deal-damage ability per . If Niv-Mizzet deals damage to an opponent while paired, you will get a triggered ability to draw a card; that draw will itself trigger Niv-Mizzet’s draw-trigger, which deals 1 damage to a target and can re-trigger the paired draw ability if it deals damage to an opponent. Each of those triggers is a separate triggered ability put on the stack and resolves in the normal way . If the damage and lethal destruction to Tandem Lookout or the paired creature happen at the same time as the creature dealt damage to an opponent, the Lookout-trigger still triggers (see Ruling [2017-03-14]). Also note you get priority and may act between the resolution of Niv-Mizzet’s draw-trigger and other spells that caused the draw (see Ruling [2018-10-05] and ).
