Noctis, Heir Apparent + Sakashima's Student

Overview

If you ninjutsu Sakashima's Student into combat, it enters the battlefield tapped and attacking (ninjutsu) and therefore "enters during combat," which will cause any Noctis, Heir Apparent you control to trigger (ninjutsu: ; creatures enter the battlefield: ). If Sakashima's Student enters as a copy of a creature already on the battlefield, it enters as that copy as it comes onto the battlefield (), so it can itself have Noctis's triggered ability and generate its own trigger in addition to any other Noctis already on the battlefield. The Student may only enter as a copy of a creature that is already on the battlefield (Ruling [2012-06-01]).

Step 1

Declare blockers. If you have an unblocked attacker, you may activate Sakashima's Student's ninjutsu ability from your hand by paying its cost and returning that unblocked attacker to your hand (ninjutsu: ).

Step 2

As a result of the ninjutsu ability resolving, put Sakashima's Student onto the battlefield from your hand tapped and attacking (; permanents entering: ; permanents enter tapped if an effect says so: ).

Step 3

If you chose for Sakashima's Student to enter as a copy of a creature already on the battlefield, it becomes that copy as it enters the battlefield (); that choice must be a creature that was already on the battlefield (Ruling [2012-06-01]).

Step 4

Because the Student entered during combat, Noctis, Heir Apparent's triggered ability(s) with the text "Whenever a creature you control enters during combat" will trigger. Any Noctis already on the battlefield will see the Student's entry and trigger ().

Step 5

If the Student entered as a copy of Noctis, the Student-as-Noctis now on the battlefield also has that triggered ability and will itself trigger for the event of the Student entering (copy enters and then its abilities can trigger: ).

Step 6

Put each triggered Noctis ability on the stack (they are separate triggers). When each triggered ability is put on the stack you choose targets for that trigger, including a target Equipment you control and a target creature you control to attach it to.

Step 7

When a triggered ability resolves, attach the targeted Equipment to the targeted creature (subject to usual targeting and attachment legality). If a chosen target is illegal on resolution, that trigger does nothing for that target.

Resolution

When you use ninjutsu to put Sakashima's Student onto the battlefield during combat, Noctis, Heir Apparent's "Whenever a creature you control enters during combat" ability will trigger for that entry (ninjutsu: ; creatures entering: ). If the Student enters as a copy of Noctis, there will be two separate Noctis-like triggered abilities: the original Noctis's ability and the Student-as-Noctis's ability; both can trigger off the Student's entry, producing two triggers (; ). You must choose a creature already on the battlefield for Sakashima's Student to copy (Ruling [2012-06-01]).
