Overview

If an opponent casts Reprieve targeting your Approach of the Second Sun while that Approach is on the stack, Reprieve’s resolution returns Approach to its owner’s hand and removes it from the stack, so that cast of Approach will not resolve and you will not win from that cast [2025-09-19] [2017-07-14].

Step 1

You cast Approach of the Second Sun from your hand (this is a cast event; whether it was cast from hand is determined at casting) .

Step 2

While that Approach is on the stack (before it starts resolving), an opponent casts Reprieve targeting that Approach (Reprieve targets a spell on the stack) .

Step 3

Players pass priority so Reprieve resolves before the Approach; when Reprieve resolves, its effect is to return the targeted spell (Approach) to its owner's hand and draw a card, removing Approach from the stack .

Step 4

Because the Approach was removed from the stack, that cast of Approach will not resolve and thus its 'If this spell was cast from your hand and you've cast another spell named Approach...' check never happens for that cast; you do not win from that cast [2025-09-19] [2017-07-14].

Step 5

If you later cast Approach of the Second Sun from your hand again, that new casting is a new cast event. The condition 'you've cast another spell named Approach of the Second Sun this game' looks at whether you have cast another Approach earlier in the game (casting is what matters, not whether that earlier cast resolved) .

Step 6

If that later cast resolves and the other parts of the condition are satisfied, you win; if it does not resolve (for example, is returned again or countered), you do not win from that cast [2017-07-14].

Resolution
