Approach of the Second Sun
Windfall
AI DraftFeb 26, 2026

Approach of the Second Sun + Windfall

Overview
Windfall discards hands and then causes draws; that can move an Approach of the Second Sun in or out of your hand, which matters because Approach’s win condition requires that the spell be cast from your hand and that you have cast another Approach earlier in the game. The check for “you’ve cast another spell named Approach of the Second Sun this game” looks at whether you CAST an Approach earlier (not whether it resolved), but the actual win happens only when the second Approach resolves, and if that resolving spell is countered you don’t win [2017-07-14, wotc]. When describing draws I reference the draw rule , and casting timing/priority for Windfall follows normal priority rules .
Step 1
You cast the first Approach of the Second Sun from your hand. When that spell resolves, because you haven’t cast another Approach earlier in the game the spell’s “Otherwise” clause applies and you put that Approach into your library seventh from the top and gain 7 life (see Ruling [2017-04-18] for how the seventh-from-top placement works).
Step 2
Later, you cast Windfall (a sorcery, so it must be cast when you have priority and at a legal time) to resolve: each player discards their hand, then each player draws cards equal to the greatest number of cards any player discarded this way .
Step 3
If the second Approach was in your hand when Windfall resolved, Windfall will cause you to discard it (moving it to your graveyard). That card is no longer in your hand; casting it from the graveyard later would not satisfy Approach’s “cast from your hand” requirement unless an effect specifically allowed you to cast it from the graveyard as though from your hand .
Step 4
If Windfall’s draw step returns Approach to your hand (you draw it back), then at that later time you may cast it from your hand. Because you have CAST another Approach earlier in the game (the first one you cast), the text condition for the second Approach is satisfied at the time it resolves — but the win only occurs when that second Approach RESOLVES, not when you cast it [2017-07-14, wotc].
Step 5
If the second Approach is countered as it resolves, the winning effect does not occur (Approach has no effect until it is resolving) [2017-07-14, wotc].
Resolution
Windfall can discard an Approach that was in your hand and can also let you draw it back; to win with a second Approach you must CAST that second Approach from your HAND and have CAST another Approach earlier in the game, and the win happens when that second Approach RESOLVES — if the second Approach is countered you won’t win [2017-07-14, wotc]. Drawing cards from Windfall uses the draw rule , and Windfall itself can only be cast when you have priority .
