Basking Broodscale + Cathars' Crusade

Overview

When Basking Broodscale enters while you control Cathars' Crusade, Cathars' Crusade will trigger and, when that trigger resolves, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control (including Basking Broodscale if it’s still on the battlefield), which will cause Basking Broodscale’s “whenever one or more +1/+1 counters are put on this creature” ability to trigger and let you create a Spawn token; if you activate Adapt before Cathars' Crusade’s trigger resolves you can cause Broodscale to get a counter (and create a Spawn) from Adapt first and then get another Spawn when Cathars' Crusade resolves. Step 1

Basking Broodscale enters the battlefield under your control; the event of a creature entering causes Cathars' Crusade’s triggered ability to trigger and be put on the stack (see ).

Step 2

Players receive priority with that triggered ability on the stack. At this point you may activate Basking Broodscale’s Adapt activated ability (it’s an activated ability you can use while Broodscale is on the battlefield).

Step 3

If you activate Adapt and it resolves, it puts a +1/+1 counter on Basking Broodscale (if it had none). That placement of one or more +1/+1 counters on Broodscale causes Broodscale’s triggered ability 'Whenever one or more +1/+1 counters are put on this creature' to trigger, letting you create a 0/1 Eldrazi Spawn token when that trigger resolves.

Step 4

Later, when Cathars' Crusade’s triggered ability resolves, it puts a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control. If Basking Broodscale is still on the battlefield at that time, it gets a +1/+1 counter from Cathars' Crusade; that event again causes Broodscale’s 'one or more +1/+1 counters' triggered ability to trigger, allowing you to create another Eldrazi Spawn token.

Resolution

If you control Cathars' Crusade and Basking Broodscale enters the battlefield, Cathars' Crusade triggers (see ). If Broodscale is still on the battlefield when that triggered ability resolves, Cathars' Crusade will put a +1/+1 counter on it and that event (one or more +1/+1 counters being put on the creature) will cause Broodscale’s token-creating triggered ability to trigger, allowing you to create an Eldrazi Spawn token. You may instead activate Adapt before the Crusade trigger resolves; when Adapt resolves it puts a +1/+1 counter on Broodscale (if it had none), causing Broodscale’s token trigger, and then when Cathars' Crusade later resolves it will put another +1/+1 counter on Broodscale and cause another token trigger.
