Birds of Paradise + Freed from the Real + Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy
Overview
If you tap Birds of Paradise by activating its mana ability, Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy will trigger and add one mana of any type that the Birds produced and Ruling [2020-04-17, wotc]. If instead Freed from the Real’s activated ability is used to tap the enchanted Birds, that is not “tapping a permanent for mana” (it does not activate the Birds’ ability), so Kinnan will not trigger; only the controller of Freed can activate those abilities [2018-03-16, wotc].
Step 1
Controller A activates Birds of Paradise’s printed ability “: Add one mana of any color.” The activation includes the cost, the Bird becomes tapped, and the ability produces one mana. Because you (the controller of Kinnan) tapped a nonland permanent for mana by activating its ability, Kinnan’s triggered ability triggers to add one mana of any type that permanent produced and Ruling [2020-04-17, wotc].
Step 2
Controller B (the controller of Freed from the Real) pays and activates Freed’s ability “: Tap enchanted creature.” That ability simply changes the enchanted creature’s tapped status; it does not activate the creature’s mana ability and therefore does not produce mana and does not trigger Kinnan [2018-03-16, wotc] and Ruling [2020-04-17, wotc].
Step 3
If the creature is tapped via Freed, its controller cannot activate the creature’s mana ability while it remains tapped because the cost cannot be paid; see the general rule for activating abilities with the tap symbol .
Step 4
If the controller of Freed pays to untap the creature (Freed’s other activated ability), the creature becomes untapped and its controller may then activate the creature’s mana ability. If the controller of Kinnan is the one who activates that ability, Kinnan will trigger; if some other player activates the ability, Kinnan’s trigger will not occur for the Kinnan controller (Kinnan cares about the player who tapped the permanent for mana).
Resolution
Activating Birds of Paradise’s : Add one mana of any color produces mana and will cause Kinnan’s triggered ability to trigger for Kinnan’s controller when that controller is the one activating the ability and Ruling [2020-04-17, wotc]. Paying Freed from the Real’s to tap the enchanted creature merely changes the creature’s tapped/untapped status and does not activate the creature’s mana ability, so that action does not produce mana and does not trigger Kinnan [2018-03-16, wotc] .
