Overview

When you cast Chain of Smog, Professor Onyx’s Magecraft will trigger for the cast (because a spell was cast) . Step 1

You cast Chain of Smog from your hand; casting completes and any "when you cast a spell" triggers trigger now—Professor Onyx's Magecraft sees you cast a sorcery and triggers .

Step 2

Chain of Smog is on the stack; players get priority and the spell eventually resolves.

Step 3

As Chain of Smog resolves, its effect causes the targeted player to discard two cards and then instructs that player: "You may copy this spell and may choose a new target for that copy." That instruction is applied during resolution, and if that player chooses to copy it, a copy is created and put onto the stack .

Step 4

The copy is a spell on the stack but it was not cast; it is owned and controlled by the player who made the copy .

Magecraft triggers when a player casts or copies an instant or sorcery spell; the original cast already produced a Magecraft trigger for you when you cast Chain of Smog . Step 6

If you were the one who copied Chain of Smog (for example, because you were the targeted player and chose to copy it when it resolved), you would get the Magecraft trigger for that copy as well and Ruling [2021-04-16].

Resolution

If you control Professor Onyx and you cast Chain of Smog, you get one Magecraft trigger for casting that sorcery . If the targeted player chooses to copy the spell as Chain of Smog resolves, that copy is created on the stack and is not cast ; you (the planeswalker controller) do NOT get an additional Magecraft trigger from that copy unless you were the one who copied it (Magecraft triggers when you copy a spell) (Ruling [2021-04-16]).
