The Battlefield

Doppelgang
Eternal Witness
AI DraftFeb 26, 2026

Doppelgang + Eternal Witness

Overview
When Doppelgang resolves and creates token copies of Eternal Witness, each token is a token permanent that copies the Witness’s characteristics (including its “When this creature enters…” triggered ability) and that triggered ability will trigger when the token enters the battlefield . Each triggered ability can target a card in that controller’s graveyard and, when the trigger resolves, return that card to its owner’s hand.
Step 1
You cast Doppelgang and choose X and X target permanents (one or more of which can be Eternal Witnesses you control).
Step 2
Doppelgang resolves and, for each targeted permanent, creates X token copies of that permanent. Tokens are created and put onto the battlefield under the creating player's control .
Step 3
Each token copy of Eternal Witness is a creature token with the same copiable characteristics as the original, including the "When this creature enters, you may return target card from your graveyard to your hand" triggered ability .
Step 4
When those token copies enter the battlefield, their triggered abilities trigger (because they entered) and go on the stack; those triggers are controlled by the controller of the tokens .
Step 5
When each triggered ability is put on the stack, you choose targets for that triggered ability (a target card in a graveyard). When the trigger resolves, you may return the targeted card to its owner’s hand.
Resolution
If you cast Doppelgang targeting an Eternal Witness, each token copy of Eternal Witness that is created and enters the battlefield will cause an Eternal Witness enter-the-battlefield triggered ability. Those triggered abilities can target cards in the controller’s graveyard and, if the triggers resolve, return the targeted cards to hand . See Ruling [2021-03-19] for the special case of a spell that simultaneously puts an Eternal Witness onto the battlefield and into the graveyard.
