Ruby Medallion
Seething Song
AI DraftFeb 26, 2026

Reiterate + Ruby Medallion + Seething Song

Overview
With Ruby Medallion on the battlefield, it reduces only the generic mana portions of costs for red spells, so it reduces the generic part of Seething Song ({2}{R}{1}{R}) if the Seething Song is being cast while Medallion is in play and it reduces the generic portions of Reiterate’s casting cost and its buyback additional cost when you cast Reiterate ({1}{R}{R} and buyback {3} become reduced in their generic portions). Reiterate, when it resolves, makes a copy of the Seething Song on the stack; that copy is not a spell that was cast and therefore is not affected by Ruby Medallion and does not gain any buyback paid on Reiterate. See , , , and Ruling [2023-07-28].
Step 1
You cast Seething Song (cost {2}{R}). If Ruby Medallion is already on the battlefield under your control, its effect reduces only the generic portion of that cost, so Seething Song’s cost to cast becomes {1}{R} instead of {2}{R} (see Ruling [2023-07-28] and ).
Step 2
While Seething Song is on the stack, you cast Reiterate targeting Seething Song. Reiterate’s printed cost is {1}{R}{R} and it has buyback {3} (see and ).
Step 3
When determining Reiterate’s total cost, you include its mana cost and the buyback additional cost per and . Ruby Medallion reduces only generic mana components of that total cost by {1} because it affects red spells you cast (Ruling [2023-07-28]). That reduces Reiterate’s generic {1} and reduces the generic portion of buyback {3} by {1}. For example, if you pay buyback, the total generic you must pay is (original generic {1} + buyback {3}) − Medallion {1} = {3} generic plus the two red mana symbols {R}{R}.
Step 4
You pay the locked-in total cost and Reiterate is cast and put on the stack (see [601.2b–g]).
Step 5
When Reiterate resolves it creates a copy of the targeted Seething Song and puts that copy onto the stack; that copy is not cast (see ).
Step 6
The copy of Seething Song resolves and adds {R}{R}{R}{R}{R} to its controller’s mana pool. Because the copy was not cast, Ruby Medallion does not reduce its cost and any buyback you paid for Reiterate does not apply to the copy (see and ).
Step 7
If you paid buyback on the original Reiterate, that buyback applies only to the Reiterate spell itself; as it resolves (after creating the copy), Reiterate returns to its owner’s hand instead of going to the graveyard if the buyback was paid (see ).
Resolution
Ruby Medallion reduces only generic mana components of costs you pay while casting a red spell, so it reduces the generic parts of Seething Song and of Reiterate (including Reiterate’s buyback’s generic part) when those spells are cast while Medallion is on the battlefield. The copy of Seething Song that Reiterate creates is not cast and therefore is not affected by Ruby Medallion or by any buyback you paid on Reiterate; buyback only affects the original Reiterate spell itself. See , , , and Ruling [2023-07-28].
