Overview

Step 1

You activate Ashnod’s Altar’s ability, which requires you to sacrifice a creature as part of the activation; when you sacrifice the creature it is moved from the battlefield to its owner’s graveyard as a sacrifice .

Step 2

When that non-Human creature is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, Mikaeus’s granted undying ability triggers (undying triggers when a permanent is put into a graveyard from the battlefield) .

Step 3

That undying triggered ability goes on the stack and will resolve later; the result of the sacrifice (the creature being in the graveyard) has already happened .

Step 4

When the undying trigger resolves, if the creature had no +1/+1 counters on it when it was put into the graveyard, return it to the battlefield under its owner’s control with a +1/+1 counter on it .

Step 5

If the creature had a +1/+1 counter on it as it left the battlefield, undying does not trigger and it will not return via undying .

Step 6

If Mikaeus and the sacrificed creature leave the battlefield at the same time, undying still triggers for the creature granted undying by Mikaeus and will return it if it had no +1/+1 counters when it left (see ruling) [Ruling 2018-12-07] .

Resolution

Sacrificing a non-Human creature to Ashnod’s Altar causes that creature to be put into its owner’s graveyard (sacrifice) ; Mikaeus’s granted undying triggers when it is put into the graveyard and will return it to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter if it had no +1/+1 counters as it left the battlefield . If the creature already had a +1/+1 counter, undying will not trigger . If Mikaeus and the creature die at the same time, the undying trigger still occurs (see ruling) [Ruling 2018-12-07].
