The Battlefield

Experimental Confectioner
Peregrin Took
AI DraftFeb 26, 2026

Experimental Confectioner + Peregrin Took

Overview
With Peregrin Took already on the battlefield under your control, Experimental Confectioner’s “When this creature enters, create a Food token.” triggered ability will create two Food tokens instead of one because Peregrin is a replacement effect that modifies token creation (Ruling [2023-06-16]). When you sacrifice a Food, Experimental Confectioner’s triggered ability will cause a Rat token to be created, and Peregrin will replace that token creation to create the Rat plus an additional Food (Ruling [2023-06-16]). Replacement effects are applied as the tokens would be created .
Step 1
Experimental Confectioner enters the battlefield. Its triggered ability "When this creature enters, create a Food token." goes on the stack and will create a Food when it resolves.
Step 2
When that triggered ability resolves it would create one Food token, but Peregrin Took's replacement effect modifies token-creation events and makes those tokens plus an additional Food token be created instead, so you create two Food tokens (Ruling [2023-06-16]; replacement effects apply as the tokens would be created ).
Step 3
If you sacrifice a Food, that sacrifice is a separate event that can cause "Whenever you sacrifice a Food, create a 1/1 black Rat creature token..." to trigger. That trigger goes on the stack when the sacrifice occurs.
Step 4
When the sacrifice-trigger resolves it attempts to create a Rat token. Peregrin's replacement effect applies to that token-creation event too, so instead of only creating the Rat, you create the Rat and an additional Food (Ruling [2023-06-16]).
Step 5
You cannot use a Food that will be created later by a triggered ability to pay costs now, and you can’t sacrifice one Food to pay multiple costs at the same time (Ruling [2024-11-08]).
Resolution
If you control Peregrin Took and Experimental Confectioner enters the battlefield, the Confectioner’s ETB trigger creates two Food tokens (the original Food plus Peregrin’s additional Food) when that trigger resolves (Ruling [2023-06-16]; see replacement-effect timing ). If you then sacrifice a Food, the Confectioner’s sacrifice-trigger will create a Rat token, and Peregrin will replace that creation event so you get the Rat and an extra Food (Ruling [2023-06-16]). You cannot use a Food that doesn’t yet exist (i.e., one that will be created later by a triggered ability) to pay costs that are being paid now; and you can’t sacrifice the same Food to pay multiple costs simultaneously (Ruling [2024-11-08]).
