AI DraftFeb 26, 2026

Gravecrawler + Warren Soultrader + Zulaport Cutthroat

Overview
You can cast Gravecrawler from your graveyard while you control a Zombie, such as Warren Soultrader; when you sacrifice that Gravecrawler to Warren Soultrader’s activated ability (pay 1 life, sacrifice another creature: create a Treasure), Gravecrawler is put into your graveyard and Zulaport Cutthroat’s triggered ability sees a creature you control die and triggers, causing each opponent to lose 1 life and you to gain 1 life (the graveyard movement is governed by , and the casting/retain-control interaction is covered by Ruling [2011-01-22]).
Step 1
Have Warren Soultrader and Zulaport Cutthroat on the battlefield under your control; ensure either already controls a Zombie or another Zombie is present so you may cast Gravecrawler from your graveyard.
Step 2
Cast Gravecrawler from your graveyard (its oracle text allows this while you control a Zombie). Note that once it’s cast and is on the stack, losing the Zombie that enabled casting won’t stop the cast from resolving (Ruling [2011-01-22]).
Step 3
When Gravecrawler resolves it becomes a creature permanent on the battlefield.
Step 4
Activate Warren Soultrader’s ability by paying 1 life and sacrificing another creature. As part of paying that cost you sacrifice Gravecrawler, putting it into your graveyard .
Step 5
Because Gravecrawler moved from the battlefield to the graveyard, Zulaport Cutthroat’s triggered ability triggers ("Whenever this creature or another creature you control dies"), so an instance of the trigger is created that will cause each opponent to lose 1 life and you to gain 1 life.
Step 6
The activated ability (Warren’s) and Zulaport Cutthroat’s triggered ability are independent objects on the stack and will resolve separately; the sacrifice having been paid earlier means the Treasure is created when Warren’s ability resolves and Zulaport Cutthroat’s trigger will resolve to change life totals when its trigger resolves.
Resolution
If you cast Gravecrawler from your graveyard (you needed to control a Zombie at the time of casting) and then activate Warren Soultrader’s ability sacrificing Gravecrawler, Gravecrawler is put into your graveyard as part of paying the activation cost and that causes Zulaport Cutthroat’s "Whenever ... another creature you control dies" trigger to trigger; that trigger will cause each opponent to lose 1 life and you to gain 1 life. Also note that once you have cast Gravecrawler and it’s on the stack, it doesn’t matter if you lose control of the Zombie that originally let you cast it (Ruling [2011-01-22]).
