AI DraftFeb 26, 2026

Blood Artist + Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Warren Soultrader

Overview
Activating Warren Soultrader’s ability (Pay 1 life, Sacrifice another creature: Create a Treasure) causes the sacrificed creature to be put into its owner’s graveyard as part of paying the cost; that put-into-graveyard event causes Blood Artist’s death-trigger(s) to trigger and Mikaeus-granted undying to trigger for any applicable non-Human creature . The triggered abilities are placed on the stack after state-based actions are checked and will resolve in APNAP order; Blood Artist will trigger for each creature that died at that time [Ruling 2016-06-08], and undying will return a creature that had no +1/+1 counters to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter when its undying trigger resolves [702.92; 704.7]. If paying Warren’s life cost reduces you to 0 or less life, you lose the game when state-based actions are checked .
Step 1
Activate Warren Soultrader’s ability. As part of activating it you pay the costs (including paying 1 life and sacrificing another creature) unless an effect changes those costs; the creature you sacrifice is put into its owner’s graveyard as part of paying the cost.
Step 2
When that creature is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, two things happen: Blood Artist creates a triggered ability for that death (and will do so for each creature that died at that time) [Ruling 2016-06-08], and Mikaeus’s granted undying creates a triggered ability for that creature if it is a non-Human and had no +1/+1 counters .
Step 3
State-based actions are checked and the game then puts all triggered abilities that resulted from those deaths onto the stack in APNAP order .
Step 4
The Blood Artist trigger(s) resolve and cause the targeted player to lose 1 life and you to gain 1 life for each trigger that resolves—these are normal life-loss and life-gain events (see for how life-gain-based triggers are treated).
Step 5
Later, the undying trigger(s) resolve. If the sacrificed creature met undying’s condition (it had no +1/+1 counters when it was put into the graveyard), it returns to the battlefield under its owner’s control with a +1/+1 counter on it . The last-known information from when it was on the battlefield is used to determine whether undying applied even if Mikaeus died at the same time [704.7; Ruling 2018-12-07].
Step 6
Once the creature returns with a +1/+1 counter, it won’t return again from undying unless it dies later without a +1/+1 counter.
Resolution
When you activate Warren Soultrader’s ability, you pay 1 life and sacrifice another creature as part of the activation. The sacrificed creature’s death causes Blood Artist to trigger (once for each creature that died) and also causes undying triggers granted by Mikaeus to trigger for your non-Human creatures that had no +1/+1 counters [Ruling 2016-06-08; 702.92]. Those triggers are put on the stack and resolve later; Blood Artist’s triggers will cause life loss and life gain when they resolve, and undying triggers (if applicable) will return the sacrificed creature to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter when they resolve [702.92; 704.7]. If paying the 1 life brings you to 0 or less life, you lose the game at the next state-based check .
