Blood Artist + Chatterfang, Squirrel General + Warren Soultrader
Overview
If you control Blood Artist, Chatterfang, and Warren Soultrader and you activate Warren’s ability (pay 1 life, sacrifice another creature: create a Treasure), the sacrifice is paid as an activation cost and the creature dies then; Blood Artist will trigger for that death . When Warren’s ability resolves it would create a Treasure token under your control, but Chatterfang’s replacement effect causes that token and an additional 1/1 Squirrel token to be created instead (Chatterfang applies to Treasure tokens and to any tokens created under your control) (Ruling [2021-06-18]; Ruling [2025-01-24]). If the sacrificed creature was a nontoken, Blood Artist’s trigger occurs; if the sacrificed creature was a token, it ceases to exist instead of being put into a graveyard and Blood Artist won’t trigger / . If multiple creatures die at the same time, Blood Artist triggers for each (Ruling [2016-06-08]).
Step 1
You activate Warren Soultrader’s ability; as part of activating the ability you pay 1 life and sacrifice another creature as a cost.
Step 2
The sacrificed creature is sacrificed as a cost; if it is a nontoken it is put into its owner’s graveyard (it 'dies') and if it is a token it ceases to exist instead / .
Step 3
State-based actions are checked and any 'dies' events create triggered abilities waiting to be put on the stack; Blood Artist’s triggered ability is triggered if a nontoken creature was sacrificed .
Step 4
The activated ability (Warren’s) is now on the stack and later resolves, attempting to create a Treasure token under your control.
Step 5
Chatterfang’s replacement effect applies to the token creation, so instead of just the Treasure token, you get that Treasure token plus a 1/1 green Squirrel creature token created at the same time (Chatterfang applies to Treasure tokens and to any tokens created under your control) (Ruling [2021-06-18]; Ruling [2025-01-24]).
Step 6
The Treasure and the Squirrel tokens enter the battlefield simultaneously. Because they entered, any relevant enter-the-battlefield triggers may trigger now; Blood Artist does not trigger for creatures entering, only for creatures dying.
Step 7
When Blood Artist’s triggered ability (from the earlier sacrifice/death) resolves, target player loses 1 life and you gain 1 life. If multiple Blood Artist triggers exist (e.g., multiple creatures died), each trigger is separate and will resolve independently (Ruling [2016-06-08]).
Resolution
Activate Warren Soultrader: you pay 1 life and sacrifice another creature as the activation cost (the sacrifice happens immediately). If the sacrificed creature is a nontoken, it is put into the graveyard and Blood Artist’s ability triggers for that death; if the sacrificed creature was a token it ceases to exist instead and Blood Artist does not trigger , , . When Warren’s ability resolves it would create a Treasure token under your control, and Chatterfang’s replacement effect applies to that token creation, so you get the Treasure token plus a 1/1 Squirrel token instead (Chatterfang applies to Treasure and all tokens created under your control) (Ruling [2021-06-18]; Ruling [2025-01-24]).
