Overview

Glacial Chasm’s triggered “When this land enters, sacrifice a land” and its cumulative upkeep (a triggered ability) interact with The Gitrog Monster’s upkeep sacrifice requirement and its land-to-graveyard draw trigger. Glacial Chasm’s cumulative upkeep is governed by the cumulative upkeep rule . Sacrificing a land (including sacrificing a land because Glacial Chasm entered or to satisfy The Gitrog Monster’s upkeep) puts that land onto the graveyard and will trigger The Gitrog Monster’s draw ability; multiple lands put into your graveyard at the same time cause only one trigger of that draw ability per the ruling [2025-01-24]. Ramunap Excavator only lets you play lands from your graveyard (it does not let you sacrifice or otherwise use them as permanents while they are in the graveyard) as clarified by ruling [2017-07-14]. If Glacial Chasm enters and you control no other lands, you must sacrifice Glacial Chasm itself as the “enters” ability resolves per ruling [2008-08-01].

Step 1

When Glacial Chasm enters the battlefield its triggered ability “When this land enters, sacrifice a land” goes on the stack and will resolve: choose and sacrifice a land permanent you control (if you control no other lands, you must sacrifice Glacial Chasm itself per ruling [2008-08-01]).

Step 2

Any land put into your graveyard as the result of that sacrifice is a land card being put into your graveyard from the battlefield; that event causes The Gitrog Monster’s ability “Whenever one or more land cards are put into your graveyard from anywhere, draw a card” to trigger (one trigger if multiple lands were put there simultaneously) as clarified by ruling [2025-01-24].

Step 3

At the beginning of your upkeep Glacial Chasm’s cumulative upkeep trigger (see ) and The Gitrog Monster’s upkeep trigger (“At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice The Gitrog Monster unless you sacrifice a land”) will both trigger; how you let those triggers resolve can change outcomes: paying Chasm’s upkeep keeps it on the battlefield, while sacrificing a land to The Gitrog’s upkeep prevents The Gitrog from being sacrificed.

Step 4

If you sacrifice Glacial Chasm itself (either because it was the only land when its ETB trigger resolved or because you choose to sacrifice it to satisfy The Gitrog Monster’s upkeep), putting Glacial Chasm into your graveyard will also trigger The Gitrog Monster’s land-into-graveyard draw ability (again, one trigger even if multiple lands went at once) as per ruling [2025-01-24].

Step 5

Ramunap Excavator allows you to play lands from your graveyard later (including lands that were sacrificed), but it does not allow you to sacrifice cards from your graveyard or use them as permanents while they are in the graveyard per ruling [2017-07-14].

Resolution

You must follow each card’s text. When Glacial Chasm enters, its “When this land enters, sacrifice a land” triggered ability resolves and you sacrifice a land permanent you control; that land being put into your graveyard will cause The Gitrog Monster’s “whenever one or more land cards are put into your graveyard from anywhere, draw a card” to trigger (one trigger if multiple lands are put there at once) as covered by ruling [2025-01-24]. Glacial Chasm’s cumulative upkeep is a triggered ability governed by and will require paying life (or sacrifice if you don’t pay) when that particular upkeep ability resolves. Ramunap Excavator doesn’t let you treat lands in your graveyard as permanents to be sacrificed or to provide costs—it only lets you play lands from your graveyard, per ruling [2017-07-14]. If Glacial Chasm was your only land when its enter-the-battlefield ability resolves, you must sacrifice Glacial Chasm itself per ruling [2008-08-01].
