Overview

If you control Chatterfang, Peregrin Took, and Warren Soultrader and you activate Warren’s ability to “Pay 1 life, Sacrifice another creature: Create a Treasure token,” both Chatterfang’s and Peregrin’s replacement effects can modify that token-creation event. Replacement effects are applied one at a time; you (the player who would get the tokens) choose the order they’re applied . Applying Peregrin Took first (it adds one Food for the event) then Chatterfang produces 1 Treasure, 1 Food, and 2 Squirrel tokens. Applying Chatterfang first then Peregrin produces 1 Treasure, 1 Food, and 1 Squirrel token. The sacrifice to activate Warren’s ability is paid before the ability resolves, so newly created tokens can’t be sacrificed to pay that activation cost . Chatterfang’s replacement effect applies to all token types including Treasure and Food [Ruling 2021-06-18], and Chatterfang does not require you to control the source creating the tokens [Ruling 2025-01-24] while Peregrin requires you to be the one creating the tokens for its effect to apply [Ruling 2023-06-16].

Step 1

Activate Warren Soultrader’s ability: pay 1 life and sacrifice another creature as the activation cost; those costs are paid now, before the ability goes on the stack or resolves .

Step 2

The activated ability goes on the stack. When it resolves, its effect would create one Treasure token under your control.

Step 3

Before tokens are created, check for replacement effects that apply to the event “one or more tokens would be created under your control” (both Chatterfang and Peregrin create such replacement effects). Replacement effects are applied one at a time; you (the player who would get the tokens) choose the order to apply replacement effects you control .

Step 4

If you choose Peregrin Took’s replacement effect first, the single token event (1 Treasure) becomes the original tokens plus an additional Food token (Treasure + Food). Then apply Chatterfang’s replacement effect to that now-two-token event, which creates that many 1/1 green Squirrel tokens in addition to the Treasure and Food; final result: 1 Treasure, 1 Food, and 2 Squirrels [Ruling 2021-06-18].

Step 5

If you choose Chatterfang’s replacement effect first, the single token event (1 Treasure) becomes Treasure + 1 Squirrel. Then apply Peregrin Took’s effect to the resulting two-token event (Treasure + Squirrel), which adds one Food token for the event; final result: 1 Treasure, 1 Food, and 1 Squirrel [Ruling 2023-06-16] (note Peregrin adds only one Food per token-creation event).

Step 6

Because the controller chooses the replacement-effect application order, they can pick which final result they get; typically you’ll apply Peregrin first to maximize the number of Squirrels (2 instead of 1).

Step 7

Keep in mind that tokens created by the resolving Warren ability don’t exist until after the ability resolves, so they cannot be used to pay the sacrifice cost you already paid to activate Warren .

Resolution

When Warren’s ability resolves you will get the Treasure plus whatever additional tokens result from the replacement effects. You control the order the replacement effects are applied ; therefore: if you apply Peregrin Took first, the single Treasure-creation event becomes (Treasure + Food), and Chatterfang then adds Squirrels equal to the number of tokens (2), yielding 1 Treasure, 1 Food, and 2 Squirrels. If you apply Chatterfang first, the single Treasure-creation event becomes (Treasure + 1 Squirrel) and Peregrin then adds 1 Food, yielding 1 Treasure, 1 Food, and 1 Squirrel. The sacrifice cost for Warren is paid as part of activation before the ability resolves, so you cannot use tokens created by that resolving ability to pay that cost . Chatterfang applies to Treasure and Food tokens [Ruling 2021-06-18], Chatterfang doesn’t require you to control the source creating the tokens [Ruling 2025-01-24], and Peregrin only applies when you are the one creating the tokens [Ruling 2023-06-16].
